Tamil protesters made their way onto a major Toronto highway Sunday night, closing six lanes of traffic in both directions and attracting a massive police contingent.
Police put out a city-wide alert, calling for all available officers to the Gardiner Expressway. Some officers were reportedly hurt on the scene. Mayor David Miller put out a statement Sunday night, calling for calm and for demonstrators to shift their protest to a safer site. The protest, which closed traffic on a main downtown thoroughfare, was mostly peaceful, but police arrested over a dozen people, charging them with mischief and breach of peace. |
