The Dry Zone Botanical Garden which was opened last year in Mirijjawila, Hambabtota will bring more economic benefits to the country, Director, National Botanical Garden Dr. Cyril Wijesundara said.
Accordingly, the garden was set up in an area covering 300 acres to conserve rare plant species endemic to the dry zone. Dr. Wijesundara pointed out that most indigenous medicinal herbs can be found in the Mirijjawila Botanical Garden (MBG) thus it can be used as a centre to promote local medicinal herbs. He further said scientific research and studies on plant bio-mass as bio-fuel, can also be conducted at this garden. Providing of educational and training facilities to generate employment opportunities in this field has already been commenced at this garden, he added. As MBG is situated on the Colombo-Kataragama highway, within the proposed Southern Province Tourism development area, it may turn into a popular tourist attraction, Dr. Wijesundara stressed. |
