There is serious suspicion regarding the fate of  tiger leader Velupillai Prabakaran in a situation where a number of LTTE leaders have been killed and the outfit has been cornered to a tiny area of 100 sq. meters.

Yesterday foreign media, including Reuter and Indian media, had reported that Prabakaran was dead. The reports stated that his body was brought to Colombo by helicopter and DNA tests would be conducted to identify the body.  These foreign media had stated this report had been confirmed by four senior officers of SL Army. However, military spokesman Brig, Udaya Nanayakkara last evening totally rejected the report stating there was no news regarding Prabakaran.

Meanwhile, a lot of ‘news’ was circulated stating Prabakaran was dead. However, Selvarasa Pathmanadan alias KP, the head of the LTTE international wing, who is abroad, had said the tiger leader was alive and he had a four hour telephone conversation with him. He also said the decision to ‘silence weapons’ was taken by Prabakaran. Media had reported that Prabakaran’s telephone conversations have been observed until 7th May. However, he had been silent throughout the last week. This is another reason for various rumours to surface regarding his fate.

Some time back Army Commander Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka had told Reuters there was a possibility that Prabakaran would have fled from Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Sathyadevi Sivanesan, Susei’s wife, who was captured by the troops, had said Prabakaran was at Mullivaikkal and 300 suicide cadres were guarding him. A member of ‘Thileepan medical unit’ of the LTTE who surrendered to the Army had said Prabakaran was injured and was staying at Mullivaikkal with Pottu Amman.

Certain quarters suspect that Prabakaran was able to flee to Mullaithivu-Welioya jungles during a confrontation yesterday morning when tiger terrorists launched an attack on Security Forces. Despite 70 terrorists being killed the attack created a temporary lull which enabled the tiger leader to wriggle through they point out.

However, the fate of the 54 year old Velupillai Prabakaran who carried out a separatist struggle for more than 25 years destroying thousands of lives, maiming thousands more is not known yet. According to defense sources the Security Forces are aware of the hideout of Prabakaran, Pottu Amman and Soosai and they would reach this place within the next 24 hours.
