Israel says it will widen its attacks on Hamas if necessary to stop the Palestinian militant group firing rockets from the Gaza Strip.
Israeli F-16 bombers hit targets across the Gaza Strip on Saturday, killing at least 227 people, local medics say. Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak said operations would continue on the ground if air strikes were not enough to change Hamas's behaviour. UN Security Council members are meeting to discuss the crisis. The emergency meeting was called at the request of Libya, the only Arab member of the council, the AFP news agency said. "Our main objective is an immediate ceasefire," Libya's deputy ambassador to the UN, Ibrahim Dabbashi, told the agency. Will there be any hope of peace to these people in the middle east? |

Syria on Saturday condemned the Israeli air raids on the Gaza Strip as a "barbaric crime" and called for an emergency summit of the Arab League, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
Syria is following with great anxiety the barbaric Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in Gaza," the statement said, branding the attack which left at least 271 people dead "a horrific crime and terrorist act Syria calls on the Arab nation and the international community to use all possible means to put pressure in Israel to immediately stop the aggression, allow the wounded to enter hospital and open all crossing points" to Gaza. |

The White House, calling for a lasting cease-fire in the Mideast, today backed Israel's deadly air attacks on the Gaza Strip and said the Islamic militant group ruling there had shown its "true colors as a terrorist organisation."
After Hamas, which controls Gaza, fired mortars and rockets deep into Israeli territory, Israel retaliated Saturday with a fierce bombing campaign - the deadliest against Palestinians in decades. The airstrikes, which have killed more than 360 people and wounded some 1,400 others, have enraged the Arab world. |

United States President-elect Barack Obama's transition team is choosing its words carefully in dealing with Israel's assault in the Gaza Strip.
The deaths of hundreds of Palestinians in Israel's deadly air strikes on Hamas will further complicate Obama's challenge to achieve a Middle East peace - something that eluded both the Bush and Clinton Administrations. David Axelrod, senior adviser to Obama, chose his words carefully, saying the President-elect would honour the "important bond" between the US and Israel. "He wants to be a constructive force in helping to bring about the peace and security that both the Israelis and the Palestinians want and deserve," Axelrod said yesterday on CBS' Face the Nation. "Obviously, this situation has become even more complicated in the last couple of days and weeks. As Hamas began its shelling, Israel responded. But it's something that he's committed to." Pressed about how much support Obama will offer Israel, Axelrod said: "He's going to work closely with the Israelis. They're a great ally of ours, the most important ally in the region. ... But he will do so in a way that will promote the cause of peace, and work closely with the Israelis and the Palestinians towards that objective." |

Israel has launched naval attacks along with aerial bombardment in Gaza.
Israel bombed navy installations and other bases of the Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip as government leaders indicated the conflict aimed at stopping rocket fire on southern Israel may broaden. Israel, under international pressure, is considering a 48-hour halt to its punishing four-day air campaign on Hamas targets in Gaza to see if Palestinian militants will stop their rocket attacks on southern Israel, Israeli officials said. Any offer would be coupled with a threat to send in ground troops if the rocket fire continues. |

Israel kills senior Hamas figure
Rayyan is the most senior Hamas leader killed since Israel began its aerial offensive [AFP] A senior leader of the Palestinian Hamas movement, Nizar Rayyan, has been killed in the latest air assault by the Israeli military in Gaza. Rayyan is the most senior Hamas official killed since Israel unleashed its massive bombardment on Gaza, in what Israel argues is a response to persistent rocket fire from the enclave. Medics say seven people, including Rayyan, his wife and three children, were killed and about 30 were wounded in the air attack on Rayyan's home in the northern Jabalya refugee camp on Thursday. Rayyan had allegedly refused to take security precautions despite Hamas figures being at risk of assassination. At least 400 people have been killed and 2,000 injured since Israel's aerial bombardment of the coastal strip started six days ago. The UN has said at least 25 per cent of the dead are civilians. Rayyan had a PhD in Islamic studies and lectured at the Islamic University in the Gaza Strip. Earlier on Thursday morning, Israel launched attacks from drones, manned aircraft and the sea on a number of targets in Gaza, including the parliament building and the justice ministry. Palestinian officials said attacks on government offices left four people dead and at least 25 people injured. Meanwhile, at least 10 rockets were fired from Gaza into southern Israel. The town of Beer-sheva, which lies around 40 km from the border, was hit and the Israeli army said one rocket hit a residential building in the port city of Ashdod - more than 30 km from Gaza. No Israelis were injured in the rocket attacks. |
