The Excise Department has targeted Rs. 34 billion as tax collection this year, an anticipated increase of Rs. 11 billion compared to last year, Commissioner General D.G.M.V. Hapuarachchi said. The total excise duties collected last year was Rs 27 billion.
"We find it difficult to expand our revenue base as we are compelled to cut down the number of new liquor bars. This is in accordance with the Mathata Thitha Mahinda Chinthana policy document and the Government is not issuing liquor permits for new outlets", he said. The production of hard liquor has dropped by 11 percent. "This is a drawback for us in collecting duties and we will be unable to reach our target. However, we could surpass last year's figure", he said. The total excise duties collected for the first six months of 2009 was Rs 14 billion and it was a similar figure in the corresponding period last year. |
