The Education Publications Department has decided to entrust the manufacture of school bags for children to a private company. Minimum specific standards have been mandated. The department has decided to come up with a “a model school bag’’ and also to recommend a price.
The Education Publications department had been aware of the increasing weight of children’s school bags and after a methodical research on this aspect, the department has made recommendations to standardize the school bag.
Also the bag will be produced on medical recommendations and thus the lower edge of the bag will not be above 04 inches from the waist and a belt and straps will be fixed to keep the bag adhered to the body.
The bag will be less than 10% of a child’s weight.
According to these recommendations the school books will be separated into several sections. In addition to this exercise books with be confined to 80-120 pages. The director general of the Educations Publications department Pushpa Kumara said that carrying several exercise books of over 300 pages each is a burden for a student.
He also said that exercise book manufacturers will be told to turn out 80-120 page books only, and the parents also will be apprised of the need to use light-weight books.
