Posted:  18 Sep 2009 08:47
The National Transport Commission has decided to increase bus fares by 5.3 percent with effective from September 22 in accordance with the annual bus fare revision.

A spokesman for the NTC said the lowest fares of Rs.6 and Rs.9 will not be revised. Therefore, nearly 40 percent of commuters who pay minimum fares of six and nine rupees will not be affected by this increase.

He said the annual bus fare revision is formulated in July each year following the National Bus Fare Policy approved by the Government and recommended by the NTC.

But, this year all private bus associations unanimously decided to postpone the revision in July in deference to the peaceful environment created in the country after terrorism was completely eradicated by the heroic Armed Forces.

The latest bus fare revision will apply to both private and Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) buses.
