The United People's Freedom Alliance swept all electorates, many by massive margins, to secure control of the Southern Provincial Council. The UPFA polled 804, 071 votes (67.88%), taking 38 seats. The UNP obtained 297,180 votes (25.09%), with 14 seats. The People's Liberation Front (JVP), got just 72, 379 votes and 3 seats. In 2004, the UPFA polled 5,61644 votes, electing 38 members. The UNP obtained 2,91,943 votes (19 seats). Political analysts opine that the result is a clear endorsement of the President's policy direction and a vote of appreciation for ridding the country of the terrorist menace. It is also pointed out that the JVP's strength in the SPC was inflated thanks to having contested under the UPFA in 2004 and that today's result is the more reliable indicator of that party's true strength in the province. |
