The world’s largest forum of former Democratic Presidents and Prime Ministers,the Club de Madrid recently concluded its Annual Conference in the Spanish capital. More than 100 former Heads of State and experts from around the world met over two days to discuss ‘The Political Dimensions of the World Economic Crisis’. President Kumaratunga addressed the conference on “Employment, Social Welfare, and Democratic Rights and Duties”. On the second day Club de Madrid appointed Wim Kok the former Prime Minister of the Netherlands as its President and Ms Jennifer Mary Shipley, former Prime Minister of New Zealand Vice President. Former Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga, was elected to the twelve member Board of Directors of the Club de Madrid. The Club of Madrid is an independent organization dedicated to strengthening Democratic values, Good Governance and leadership around the world by drawing on the unique experience and resources of its Members. More than 74 democratic former Heads of State and Government from more than 50 countries contribute their time, experience and knowledge to this mission. •Club de Madrid Forum concluded that the economic crisis has made manifest a much deeper complex and systemic crisis. •They highlighted the need for a more equal balance between the State and the Market. They continued that better States, accountable to democratic institutions engender better markets. •The center of economic recovery policies should address the social impact of the crisis, strengthening social protection for the people. •They stated that public accountability and good governance, financial regulatory frameworks and democratic checks and balances were essential. •The Forum also called for an in depth reform of the global financial architecture, as well as broader representation of developing countries in the international system. •Finally Club de Madrid declared that democracy must deliver to improve the well being of peoples and empower all communities of each country, so that they can participate equally in developing the future. •Democracy is an instrument to address the crisis as well as a key objective for its successful resolution. |
