Five medical officers attached to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital and two other persons have been diagnosed with the A/H1N1 virus, hospital sources said.
The five medical officers have been sent home after treatment while the other two are being treated in-house.

Doctors at the ICU had earlier complained about the shortage of medical masks for their use and said they were in danger of contracting the virus.  They had also complained of the lack of a separate ward, unlike at other hospitals, for AH1N1patients and said other patients were, therefore, at risk of contracting the disease.
The doctors had warned that if remedial steps were not taken soon they would inform the Government Medical Officers Association and refrain from working under such conditions.
According to reports Karapitiya Hospital had 400 masks for the 400 doctors working at the hospital.
