A personal weapon believed to have belonged to LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran was found buried, together with a large stock of other military items in the Wellamulliwaikkal area in Mulaitivu yesterday.
Vavuniya Senior DIG Nimal Lewke confirmed the M16A2 weapon along with a grenade launcher was believed to have been used by the LTTE leader as his personal weapon. The gun had been found together with a bullet proof vest suspected to have been worn by Prabhakaran.
According to initial reports the military items buried was found on Monday evening by the Special Crimes Unit of the Kilinochchi Police and was to be transported to the Vavuniya Senior DIG’s Office.

125 suicide kits, 50 mortar bombs, 25 anti aircraft guns were among some of the items recovered.Meanwhile a large number of weapons including 2000 kg of explosives, five 81 mm mortar bombs and 191 anti personnel mines were recovered during a search operation carried out by the army in the general areas of Palali, Oddusudan, and Vellamullivaikkal.
The recovered weapons also included forty-two hand grenades, eight fuses, one pack of chargers, one anti tank mine, , one claymore mine, eighteen Rocket Propeller Grenades (RPG), one 152 mm artillery round, four 60 mm mortar bombs, two ‘Rangan’ bombs, two detonators, two rounds of .38 mm ammunition, two rounds of micro pistol ammunition, four T-56 weapons, two T-56 bayonets, twenty-two T-56 magazines, a stock of weapon parts, one T-81 weapon, six M-16 weapons in Paranthan and Akkarayankulam on Monday.

Troops engaged in search operations in Nandikadal Nochchikulam and Iranamadu recovered three I-com communication sets, one I-com battery, one box of T-56 ammunition, , sixteen 14.8 mm weapon bayonets, two shot guns, two thousand and five hundred rounds of T-56 ammunition, seven artillery  boosters, forty-six artillery fuses and one disposable RPG bomb.
The weapons that had been buried in nearby forests were recovered by several army teams. The troops also recovered two tusks of elephants from an underground arms dump.
Meanwhile a special team deployed by the Mallawi police recovered 16 hand grenades, eight detonators, two pressure mines and four 60mm para’s during a search operation in Mankulam.
