These standards can range from utilizing high personal integrity to showing understanding and consideration for employees who may be having significant personal problems that are affecting their performance. The following are some tips that you can use to help you become a great supervisor: Embrace Change: Today, more than ever before in the history of our country, there are many changes taking place. In particular, companies are using mergers and downsizing in an effort to avoid closing their doors to business entirely. Such changes may move you from a comfort zone of supervision and into a new area. It is very valuable to be flexible and to embrace change whether it is relocating to a new division, a new city or even to a new state. On the Job Training: Keep your eyes open for opportunities to gain on the job training. Some companies have training available in a variety of different ways. Some of these ways include software, in-house and off-site seminars and off-site conferences. Getting additional training can help you stay current on trends regarding hiring, discipline, firing and every other aspect of being a supervisor. More importantly, being well trained can show management that you are a great supervisor who cares about staying informed and up to date. Know your Co-workers: Being a great supervisor involves knowing your workers well. Each individual makes up a part of the team of employees that you are responsible for supervising. It is important to know each person well in terms of their personality, work habits, level of ethics, character and how they interact with other employees. This familiarity can help you to identify potential problems before they arise. Communicate Well: Take the initiative to communicate well with everyone, whether it is someone you report to or someone that you supervise. Articulate your thoughts and ideas to others in a manner they can understand making sure not to speak to others in a condescending or derogatory manner. When it is necessary to perform disciplinary actions, be firm but compassionate. Try to put yourself in the other person's shoes and treat the person as you would like to be treated. Learn from Other Great Supervisors: Take the time to observer other great supervisors either at your own company or at other companies that are successful. Remember that people are human and can make mistakes so don't emulate the person but rather emulate the great supervisory characteristics the supervisor has. Many great supervisors are known for being proactive and taking action rather than supervising in a reactionary manner. |
